Better Safety at Old Sarum
In an effort to improve safety with all aspects of our operation at Old Sarum Airfield we have made available to all our visitors an online form which can be used to report to us anything which someone may feel affects safety at the airfield.
Reports can be aviation or non-aviation related and we have provided some examples and a link below.
Example 1
General or Non-Specific Report
Name, E-Mail and Telephone Number required.
Last weekend I slipped on ice outside the main doors.
Report Ends
Our likely action: To ensure any area near all entrances to the building are gritted when it is icy.
Example 2
Specific Incident Report
Name, E-Mail and Telephone Number required.
Date: 25 December 2010
Time: 16:00
My Location: On the ground
Incident Location:
In the Air, Within the ATZ, Within the circuit
Aircraft Details:
Aircraft (A) Reg: Unknown
Aircraft (A) Actions: Flew at low level over the airfield
Aircraft (B) Reg: G-EMLY
Aircraft (B) Actions: Had to take avoiding action during the landing phase
What Happened:
Whilst I was having a cup of tea and a fresh air stick outside the main building at Old Sarum I heard the sound of bells in the distance. Looking to my right I saw an unlit aircraft of a type not known to me fly over the airfield at low level towards Andover (West to East). G-EMLY was on final and had to go around to avoid the aircraft.
Report Ends
Our likely action: To investigate the reporter for likely substance abuse and speak to the pilot of G-EMLY to gather additional information.
Example 3
General or Non-Specific Report
Name, E-Mail and Telephone Number required.
I have noticed on the south side of the runway one of the fence posts is missing or has fallen down and part of the fencing barbed wire is coming away. There is also a large board resting on one of the posts nearby.
Report Ends
Our likely action: Due to the risk to ground staff working on that side of the airfield from the barbed wire, the risk of entry on to the movement area by pedestrians or animals through the gap in the fence and the danger of the large board being blown on to the runway action would be taken without delay to rectify the situation.
Whilst each of these example may seem a little tongue in cheek they highlight the fact someone may not know who to report these events to or there would be no official form of reporting available, however in both cases safety was an issue and possible actions could and would be taken to prevent the same happening in the future.
You can get to the form by going to the Pilot Services menu (top of the screen) or by clicking here
