The weekend that was
On Sunday (7th March 2010) we held our regular Vintage Sunday event and welcomed a huge number of visitors to the Airfield.
We started the day bathed in glorious sunshine, a theme which carried on for the whole day. Having arrived for work at 07:50 there were people already at the airfield who were keen to get started.
75 visiting aircraft enjoyed the flight in, around 15 people took the vertical decent option and all of the flying training organisations made the most of the 10 knot 'down the runway' breeze and deep blue skies. General aviation spectators filled the car park almost to our maximum limit, a large motorcycle group also popped in to enjoy the day and we have never seen so many aviation photographer's tripods on the field.
We have to thank our customers, regular and visitor alike...
With so much activity we were operating almost to our maximum capacity, in fact this was the second busiest day in recent years which. coming after last weekend's weather and so little activity was a bit of a shock to the airfield systems.
What made the day for us was the understanding attitude of our customers, many of whom took the time to say how much they appreciated how hard we were all working, were concerned we had not had a break all day or were offering to help by take food and refreshments to the tower. Nearly everyone we served in the Cafe were friendly, even if a little fed up having to wait a little while, which made a big difference especially when the queue had begun at 08:00 and didn't let up once until 15:20 (and that was only for a short time before people started arriving again!). Thank you to those many people who made our job a little easier!
Pushing the boundaries of anything provides a unique chance to learn new things which can be put into practice the next time.
So in brief we dealt with:
- Over 450 aircraft movements - 75 were visitors and more than 12 of these aircraft had never visited Old Sarum before
- Delivering almost 2000 litres of fuel
- Preparing and serving 182 individual ordered meals and an uncountable number of snacks and drinks
As there were so many people taking pictures we are hoping to see some appear in our Gallery in the next few days or so, some perhaps from our regular contributors - we'll update this page when we start to see them arrive.
