With the introduction of AFPEx, the online flight plan filing system introduced by NATS (National Air Traffic Services) we offer an explanation of and guide to using the facility.

AFPEx is set to replace the current FAX system although it may take quite some time to do so fully. A breathing space then to learn how to use the system.

The Gritty Detail
AFPEx (Assisted Flight Planning Exchange) is a computer program running on a remote server that you connect to via a web browser, which is Java enabled and log in using a registered user account. Once completed the flight plan is sent electronically to all of the relevent authorities.

I know to the non-IT person this might sound confusing right from the start! In english this means you get on the internet, go to the website https://ts2.flightplanningonline.co.uk/ and enter your details (username and password), fill out your flight plan and send it. You obtain a username and password by applying for an account, to do this go to the website above.

The Good
The online version ensures a readable and perfectly correct flight plan is delivered to all the right authorities with a simple click of SEND.

The Bad
No errors allowed. Some airfields do not have AFPEx. It takes a while to obtain an account. You still need to send all the other forms as normal (such as the GAR form).

You do not need to have a personal AFPEx account. At Old Sarum we (the Airfield) and the Flying School have accounts which you may access on request. We may even be able to provide support if this is your first time using the system!
